What can you do to be safe when driving through road construction sites and work zones?

1. Expect the unexpected: Vehicles and equipment are constantly moved around in the work zones, to add to this the poor road surface conditions, plus other motorists who are just as overwhelmed by it all. It is easy to understand why even a few seconds of inattentiveness can cost you dearly when driving through these areas. Be present and keep your eyes on the road. Do away with all distractions including music and even hands-free cellular and GPS devices. This is one of the best ways to ensure that sudden obstacles, lane changes, and graveled surfaces do not catch you off guard.

Come to a complete stop if instructed and proceed only when signaled to do so. Ignoring these signals can lead to car wrecks or fines, so it’s crucial to adhere to posted speed limits and lane restrictions.
5. Announce yourself to other motorists: Road construction zones often have reduced visibility, especially during dawn, dusk, or inclement weather. Turning on your headlights will make your car more visible to other drivers and workers, improving safety for everyone.
6. Merge early and yield to others: Merge into the appropriate lane well before reaching a lane closure or merge point.
