Road map of Kansas City

The 2017 Allstate annual report found that Kansas City, Kansas has the safest drivers in the country. But, in 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that Kansas figured in the list of states that had the most dangerous roads in the country.

Now, it’s easy to pin the blame for this on the rural roadways of the state. However, Kansas City has several roads that are frequently in the news for multi-vehicle accidents. Continue reading to know more about these car accident hotspots.

The top 3 most dangerous intersections and roads of Kansas City, Kansas.

The I-70: The Kansas City section of the I-70 is one of the most dangerous not just in the state but also in the country. Unfortunately, little has been done over the years to tackle the sharp curves along this stretch of the interstate, which is among the oldest parts of the Interstate Highways system.

State Avenue: The intersection of 75th and State Avenue as well as 31st and State Avenue were the sites of devastating accidents in 2021. The one at the 75th led to one fatality and 5 people being seriously injured while the crash at the 31st involved a pedestrian fatality.

Parallel Parkway: An April 2021 crash at 67th and Parallel ended in one fatality and 3 seriously injured victims while two other accidents at different intersections of Parallel parkway left 2 more people dead.

But, are these roadways solely to be blamed for these accidents?

While the sharp turns, road conditions and inclement weather definitely played a role in some of the crashes reported in Kansas City, there were two other factors that were just as much to blame:

  • Speeding
  • Driver inattention

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation’s statistics, a majority of fatal crashes are in fact attributed to driver inattention, and this is understandable.

Less than perfect road conditions coupled with high speeds are dangerous as it is. Now, couple these two factors with a driver who is not focused on the road, and you get a catastrophic mix that can only leave death and devastation in its wake.

Why should you have to pay for the error of another motorist or even poor road conditions?
